Participants of the experiment
The 6-member international crew who will take part in the 520-day “flight” to Mars, will be made up of three representatives from Russia and one each from China, Italy and France. The European Space Agency (ESA) is also contributing to the project by involving two “astronauts”.
The selection of participants took place in several rounds. The first round involved administrative selection, based on results from questionnaires completed and sent by the participants. A complex medical examination in IMBP and in the Central Clinical Hospital of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, as well as in the ESA Centre of Astronaut preparation in Keln, Germany, followed. Upon the completion of the proceedings, each of the participants signed a contract to outline detailed terms of participation in the project, including the financial terms (about 13,000 EUR for the 520-day isolation).
The requirements on the candidates were similar to those required of astronauts: age between 20 and 50 years, good state of health, motivation, height below 185 cm, knowledge of Russian and English, educated in medicine, natural or technical sciences, IT or electronics. Other criteria also included the level of academical education, their professional experiences and social habits; this enabled the selection of such candidates for the crew who would endure the demanding conditions of the long-term isolation.
The following members were selected for the crew:
-
Alexei Sergeyevich Siteev (Russia), Crew Commander (38 years)
-
Suchrob Rustamovich Kamolov (Russia), Doctor (37 years)
-
Alexandr Yegorovich Smoleyevskiy (Russia), Researcher (32 years)
-
Diego Urbina (ESA, Italy), Researcher (27 years)
-
Romain Charles (ESA, France), Flight Engineer (31 years)
-
Wang Yue (China), Researcher (27 years)
